Value Delivery Network A value delivery network allows many companies to create customer value that cannot be created by use of the company’s own value chain. A â€Å"Value delivery network,† is made up of the company, suppliers, distributors, and ultimately the customers who partner with each other to improve the performance of the entire system (Armstrong et al. 52). This type of system interests me because I have always been curious as to what path a product or service must take in order to be considered a â€Å"value† to a customer. Generating my interest during one of the case studies during class, Accenture is a company that has improved the value delivery network for many companies. Accenture has improved not only the value delivery system for the airline industry, but its own global delivery system with its partner BT. Accenture found the need to introduce e-commerce to the airline industry's line of services to its customers. E-commerce, as Accenture puts it; reduces costs, maximizes information about customers, allows targeting certain distribution channels, differentiates products, establishes long term relationships, and creates lifetime loyalty; all of which creates value in the delivery network (Stewart). E-commerce allows the airline industry to connect to its customers directly and with third party electronic channels that provide value to customers in ways unknown in the traditional distribution cycle (Stewart). As a consulting firm, Accenture not only improved the value delivery network for the airline industry, but for its partner BT. Signing a 10-year, $575M outsourcing contract w/ BT, Accenture has essentially expanded its geographic reach of services provided to BT within the global market. Services provided under the new contract include customer contact/call center, recruitment, pension administration, payroll and benefits administration, performance management administration, health and safety, and HR advisory and information services. By outsourcing most of its services to Accenture, BT improves its value delivery network by providing lower costs and higher quality services to its customers. As stated by BT's Alex Wilson, "Accenture HR Services has a proven track record of consistently high quality service and a true partnership approach. These were key factors in its selection, along with its unmatched ability to deliver HR services on a global basis. This agreement will allow our staff to concentrate even more on the strategic role of HR management to our growing global business." Just as H onda has outsourced all of its automobile mirror operations to Donnelly Corporation benefiting both companies in terms of increased performance and passing the value on to its customers (Armstrong et al.

Antigone’s Relations Essay

In the two Antigone plays that we read, Anouilh’s 1940’s modern version and Sophocles’ version, there are many contrasts. Everything from the setting to the message is different, however the relationship between characters is the most striking difference; relationships with Antigone in particular. In Sophocles’ version, the character relations are rather underdeveloped, which is an extreme contrast from the relationships shown in Anouilh’s version of Antigone. The relationships that are the most different between the two plays are Antigone’s relationship with Creon and with Haemon. Antigone’s relationship with Creon in the Sophocles’ version differs greatly from the Anouilh version. The most obvious difference is that in the Anouilh version Creon doesn’t want Antigone to die and tries every way he can to keep her alive. He exhausts just about every argument possible, starting and frequently returning to the similarities between her and her father. He tells her how idiotic her father was and that she would be wise to not make the same mistakes even though she carries the same characteristics that lead Oedipus to his death. Then he switches tactics and half orders her to not be put to death because she has to marry Haemon, and when that doesn’t work, he pulls a pity plea of how much he would like to bury Polynices but simply can’t because of his duties as a king and what it would cost him if he bent to Antigone’s will. None of these arguments work, even when Creon, in a last desperate attempt to sway her, reveals to her how horrible her precious brothers actually are. Really in this version, Creon does care about Antigone; he has nothing to gain from keeping Antigone alive besides that she would marry Haemon, and her sister Ismene is still around to marry him if Antigone is put to death. In contrast, the Sophocles version doesn’t present such a caring- if you could call it that in Anouilh’s- relationship. In this relationship all Creon wants to do is see Antigone put to death. He is unswayed by any argument that his son Haemon throws out there. In this version things are simple. Antigone went against Creon’s edict and buried her brother, so therefore she must be put to death, no ifs ands or buts about it. There is no room for argument or feeling, and no real relationship development. While the relationship between Antigone and Creon in the Sophocles version is very underdeveloped when compared with the Anouilh version, the relationship between Antigone and Haemon is even more so. In the Sophocles story, there is no indication of the great everlasting love between the two that would drive Haemon to kill himself over finding Antigone dead. There is almost no feelings of anger or sadness at her sentence to death until Haemon suddenly flies into a rage at the very end upon seeing Antigone dead and shoves a sword through his body. To Haemon’s credit, he does show a little bit of rebellion when arguing with his father about the outcome of Antigone. He comes through with a little bit of strength after all of the â€Å"oh father, you are so wise† junk, and tells him that maybe he should bend just a little for her for his own benefit. And when Creon doesn’t listen to his advice, he implies with his last words to his father â€Å"†¦ And you will never see my face again†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (Sophocles, scene 3, line 133) that he may in fact take his own life. But that’s as far as it goes, and it seems to be more out of anger at his father than of his love for Antigone. In Anouilh’s version of the story, Haemon and Antigone have a much more developed relationship. It’s plainly clear that Haemon loves Antigone and wants to be with her, even if she doesn’t fully understand why he chose her over Ismene. The fact that he did chose her over Ismene shows more than anything else that he does indeed love her. Anouilh’s added scene with Haemon and Antigone develops the relationship so much more and gives one a more believable basis for Haemon killing himself over Antigone. The scene is an intimate look at a couple in love, instead of in the Sophocles version a relationship that seems t o be arranged for convenience at best. The changes in scenes which enhance and develop the relationships of Antigone with Creon and Haemon greatly improve the Anouilh version. Without the added scenes and implications in the scenes, the Sophocles version is rather dry and doesn’t inspire much catharsis. However, in the Anouilh version, the reader is actually made to feel for the characters through their trials and tribulations, and therefore to be angry at Creon for killing her, disbelieving of Antigone for her stubborn pride, and sad for all involved when everyone except for Creon end up dead. So although both versions are supposed to be the same story, the relationship developments are so  contrasting that they are different stories altogether.

He smiled, a fierce delight in his eyes. â€Å"You should speak to the soldiers gathered here and make an official declaration of war. And then you should go to Highmore and speak to the ones there. They don’t even know you as their queen yet, let alone the person sending them to fight. And you should practice up on your magic, both for battle and to show your own people that that Rowan bitch can’t touch you.† I shivered at the feelings his words inspired in me. In Tucson, I’d been trying to hide from my magic, but now it was calling to me again. I think she’d been about to hurl an insult, but I gave her no chance. I still wasn’t ready to be touched, and she’d caught me off guard. With no second thoughts, my instincts summoned up magic, the air shoving her away from me and slamming her-hard-into a wall. She stood there, dazed, and I gasped, horrified at what I’d brutally done without even thinking. She kept her distance, though, so apparently my brief lapse into violence had done some good. After a while, I had no patience for it and simply went into my bedroom, leaving her out there. I locked the door but could still hear her going on and on. Remembering Rurik saying that I should go out and talk to the people who could possibly be dying for me, I tried to distract myself from Ysabel by looking through the room’s closet. I figured I should probably wear something gentry, and Nia had kept me well-stocked. The spark was rekindling in me, that need to take revenge against Leith and show Katrice we couldn’t be pushed around. I would prove a strong leader for those out there. I was pulling out a silvery blue silk dress that looked suitable when Ysabel’s shouting finally stopped. With a sigh of relief, I started to drape the dress over a chair-and caught a glimpse out the small window. There was an army out there. I immediately backed away, trying to block out the sea of faces encamped outside. I dropped the dress, feeling dizzy. The reality of it all hit me, and I again felt helpless and out of my league. The Awakening, is considered one of the first texts addressing the concerns of the feminist movement. The story revolves around a small group of friends from  New Orleans  who vacation together on Grand Isle each summer, the main character being Edna Pontellier. On the other hand, there’s a film entitled  Grand Isle, which is a direct translation of Chopins novel. Both  The Awakening  and  Grand Isle  make use of setting, symbols, and characters to reveal the ultimate theme of the work: that nobody is free from society. Grand Isle  is a very complete adaptation of  The Awakening and with only a couple minor details altered, the film takes Chopins novel and completely translates it into a different medium, often quoting the novel exactly in character dialogue. Disregarding its origins and influences, as a work of art on its own,  Grand Isle  is well filmed with an enjoyable cast and portrays its main themes completely. The setting of the novel is historically accurate. Many families living in New Orleans and similar cities would retreat to small coastal islands for the summer to escape the heat of the city. On a higher level, the two main elements of the setting, the city and the island, or civilization and the wilderness, serve as symbols. The city, or civilization, symbolizes oppression by societal demands, while the island, or wilderness, symbolizes freedom from societys watch. When Edna is residing in the city, she is weighed down by societys expectations of her. She must be home on certain calling days, she must be subservient to her husband, she must put her children before all else, and she must be the person that conformed society encourages her to be. On the other hand, when she is on the island for the summer, Edna is freed from many of her duties. Her husband is often away with business, her children spend the days playing at the beach, the other inhabitants live so close as to make calling obsolete, and Edna is left with a sense of freedom from all which holds her down in the city. Another important aspect in The Awakening  and  Grand Isle is symbols. Most obviously, water is continually contrasted against land as a source of freedom. As is typical in much of literature, the water serves as a symbol of free will and lack of restraints. Just as the ocean cannot be forced to move in any controlled way and is not enclosed by any sort of container, Edna feels that, while in the water, she has complete autonomy over her life. On land, however, this independence is lost, as she must once again conform to the conventions of society. Ednas suicide by drowning in the ocean represents her achievement of ultimate release from society, for social restrictions cannot impede the dead. Birds serve as another motif throughout the novel and the movie, also a symbol of freedom. As birds are not confined to two dimensions of movement, like human beings and all land dwelling animals, they are seen as unchained from the ground, free to move about at will in the spacious and seemingly unlimited sky. Like a bird, Edna feels that she should also be able to move and act at whim, yet like many of the birds in the novel and the film, she is caged and tied down by the constraints of society. At the end of the novel, although this detail is missing from the film adaptation, a sea bird with a broken wing is seen flying above the ocean. The bird, though still free, still somewhat able to fly, does not have the complete, ideal freedom of the other birds. This bird represents Edna, as she cannot have ideal freedom, for society will always be a constricting factor, so she must, like the injured bird, choose to be free in an imperfect manner, or remain completely restricted and tied down. Characters, especially Edna and her two foils, are important elements of both the novel and the film. As a woman in a very traditional social position, Adele Ratignolle is an extreme opposite of Edna. Adeles entire life revolves around her husband and children, and she exists entirely within, and without questioning the constraints set up by society. This is the type of woman that Edna feels so strongly that she should not be. On the other extreme is Mademoiselle Reisz, who is not married and is portrayed as absolutely independent; she has cast off the most traditional roles of women by remaining unmarried and childless, and she often scoffs at many other aspects of society and the people who sustain those aspects. This is the type of woman that Edna looks up to and aspires to emulate. All three of these characters are symbols for different eras of women. Chopin uses Adele to represent the traditional woman, happy with her lack of freedom because she knows nothing else. Edna embodies the feminist movement, representing change and movement towards independence. Mademoiselle Reisz is the future woman, the woman that the feminist movement hopes to release. She is the fundamental goal of the feminist revolution. Overall, while  The Awakening  and  Grand Isle  are almost completely the same, they both portray one womans awakening to the realization that society is confining, and her conviction that she must follow her newfound awareness or risk being held down forever.
